§ II The product, in depth
Overview
CosmoLex is a cloud-based legal practice management application founded in 2014 and headquartered in North Brunswick, New Jersey. The product combines matter management, time and expense tracking, billing, trust accounting, and business accounting in one system, which distinguishes it from tools that rely on QuickBooks or Xero for general ledger functions. It is aimed at solo, small, and mid-sized firms that handle general practice work and want a single subscription covering both practice management and bookkeeping. The platform also includes calendaring, task management, document storage, a client portal, and a mobile app.
Pricing
Pricing is publicly disclosed on the vendor website. CosmoLex offers three tiers on annual billing. The Standard tier is $109 per seat per month billed annually and includes time, expense tracking and billing, trust and business accounting, financial reporting, a custom dashboard, matter and client custom fields, calendaring and task management, a mobile app and client portal, and integrations with Outlook, Microsoft 365, and Google Calendar. The Elite tier is $129 per seat per month billed annually and adds matter workflows and automation, matter templates, and matter budgets on top of Standard. The Elite + Website tier does not list a public per-seat price; it layers a customized website, SEO-optimized legal content, custom firm pages, client-facing tools, and hosting onto an Elite subscription, with a 20 percent discount on CosmoLex Websites when combined with an annual Elite plan. Month-to-month pricing is not listed on the current public pricing page.
Historically, CosmoLex pricing has trended upward. In January and February 2022, the entry annual plan was $79 per seat per month and the month-to-month option was $89. By mid-2022 a “Starter” tier was listed at $85, and by August 2023 the starting price had moved to $89. In April 2025, the Standard tier was captured at $99 per seat per month and Elite at $129, and the current Standard price has since moved to $109 while Elite has held at $129. Over roughly four years, the entry annual price has increased by about 38 percent.
Ideal fit
CosmoLex is positioned for solo practitioners, small firms, and mid-sized firms that practice in general areas rather than a specific vertical. The inclusion of trust accounting and business accounting inside the same product makes it a reasonable fit for firms that do not already run a separate bookkeeping system and that want three-way trust reconciliation handled natively. Firms with an established outside accountant using QuickBooks or Xero may get less relative value from the bundled accounting module. The Elite tier’s workflow automation, matter templates, and matter budgets are oriented toward firms with enough matter volume to benefit from standardized processes. Very large firms, firms with heavy litigation-specific or IP-specific workflow needs, and firms requiring deep document management are not the stated target.
Integrations
Integration list not documented in public sources.
The included features reference integrations with Outlook, Microsoft 365, and Google Calendar, but a complete integration catalog is not captured in the structured input for this profile.
How it compares
Among practice management products aimed at solo and small firms, CosmoLex’s main differentiator is native business accounting, which means the firm’s general ledger lives in the same system as billing and trust. Clio Manage, one of the most widely adopted peers in this segment, takes the opposite approach and relies on integrations with QuickBooks Online for general ledger work, which appeals to firms that already use QuickBooks but adds a second subscription. MyCase and PracticePanther are also common comparators at similar firm sizes and price points, with MyCase often cited for client intake and communication and PracticePanther for workflow automation; both generally delegate general ledger accounting to external tools. Firms choosing between these products often weigh whether they prefer a single-vendor accounting experience (CosmoLex) or a larger integration ecosystem with a dedicated accounting package alongside (Clio, MyCase, PracticePanther). Pricing across these peers tends to cluster in a similar range on a per-seat basis, so the decision is more often driven by accounting strategy and workflow preferences than by headline price.

§ III What it gets right
- Billing depth ranked 8.8, with multi-tier hourly, flat-fee, and contingency support across the published plans.
- Matter management scored 8.5, covering 6 practice areas without specialist add-ons.
- Client portal scored 7.8, with secure messaging and document sharing on the mid-tier and above.
§ IV Where it disappoints
- Trust accounting scored 6.0: no published state coverage data. Verify IOLTA compliance with your bar before commitment.
- Reporting scored 6.5: custom and scheduled reports are paywalled to the upper tier.
- Document assembly scored 7.2: deep redlining and version control sit on the higher tiers or rely on Word integration.
§ V Who should buy it
CosmoLex is the right call for mid-size firms that want a comprehensive general-practice platform with integration breadth and transparent pricing. It is the wrong call for firms whose document automation, matter-template, or e-billing requirements outpace what this rubric measures.
